What is Chat-GPT Ads?
Basically, OpenAI – the mob behind ChatGPT – started running ads inside ChatGPT conversations. They show up for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separate from ChatGPT’s actual answers. They piloted it in the US first, then expanded to Australia in early 2026. Think of it like Google Ads but instead of showing up on a search results page, you’re showing up inside a live conversation someone is having while they’re actively researching and deciding. Pretty wild, right?
How do ChatGPT Ads actually work?
The ads get matched contextually to whatever the user is chatting about. So if someone in Brisbane is asking ChatGPT to help them find a plumber, compare dental clinics in Sydney, or figure out which kitchen renovation company to go with – a relevant ad can appear right in that moment. You don’t get to see what people are actually typing – OpenAI doesn’t share individual conversations or personal data with advertisers. What you do get is aggregated performance data: impressions, clicks, conversions. Enough to optimise properly.
Can I target specific cities like Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane?
Not at this stage, currently you can only select Australia as a location. We expect in the near future more local geo-targeting (ie: Targeting Sydney, Melbourne, or even a suburb like Penrith, NSW) will be implemented in the roadmap.
Is ChatGPT Ads right for my industry?
If your customers do any kind of research before they buy or book, ChatGPT Ads are absolutely worth looking at. I work with clients across trades, dental, finance, eCommerce, retail and professional services. The common thread is that their customers ask questions before converting. Electricians. Dentists. How much does it cost to run ChatGPT Ads in Australia?
The platform is still early and that’s actually the advantage right now. CPMs have dropped significantly since the US pilot – roughly $15 to $40 as of 2026, down from $60 at launch. That’s still pricier than Facebook on a straight CPM comparison, but the intent level is completely different. You’re not interrupting someone mid-scroll, you’re appearing while they’re deep in a research conversation about exactly what you sell. As a general guide I’d say start with at least $1,500 per month in ad spend so there’s enough data to work with and optimise off. The earlier you get in, the cheaper the inventory and the less competition you’re fighting. In 12 months when every agency in the country has a ChatGPT Ads offering on their website, entry costs will be higher. That’s just how new platforms go.
Do ChatGPT Ads work for small businesses?
Yeah, genuinely. OpenAI built the self-serve Ads Manager specifically for businesses of all sizes – not just the big brands with six-figure monthly budgets. The real advantage for small businesses right now is that barely anyone is running ChatGPT Ads in Australia yet. Most businesses in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Perth have never even heard of it.
Think about it this way – imagine you’re a plumber in Melbourne and someone is asking ChatGPT to recommend the best plumber in their area. Your ad can appear right there, in that moment, while they’re actively deciding. That’s the kind of placement that used to require serious Google Ads spend to compete for.
How is this different from Google Ads?
With Google Ads, someone types a short search query and your ad appears on the results page. They scan, they click, or they don’t. With ChatGPT Ads, someone is deep inside a conversation – asking follow-up questions, describing their situation, comparing options in detail – and your ad appears right in that context. The intent level is similar but the depth of engagement is completely different. People spend significantly more time in a ChatGPT conversation than they do scanning a search results page. For most businesses I work with, ChatGPT Ads work best running alongside Google, not instead of it. Two touchpoints. Two different moments in the buying journey. Both valuable.

Does every business need all three right now? Not necessarily.
